Love Where You Live: Living in Burlington Ontario

Your Local Guide to Waterfront Living, Neighbourhoods, Hidden Gems and Everything That Makes Burlington Feel Like Home
Things to do and where to live in Burlington
There is something about Burlington that makes people want to stay.
Maybe it's the beautiful Lake Ontario waterfront, the established neighbourhoods with tree-lined streets, or the fact that you can enjoy a morning downtown and spend the afternoon hiking along the Niagara Escarpment.
For me, one of Burlington's greatest qualities is the variety of lifestyles it offers. You can live in a waterfront condo, a charming older home filled with character, a newer family neighbourhood, or a country property surrounded by nature, all within the same city.
As a local Realtor® with a background in interior design, I've always appreciated how much a home and its surroundings influence the way we live. Finding the right home isn't simply about square footage or the number of bedrooms. It's about finding a place that feels right for you.
Welcome to Love Where You Live: Burlington, where we're exploring the places, neighbourhoods and everyday experiences that make this city such a wonderful place to call home.
Burlington's Waterfront: The Heart of the City
It's difficult to talk about Burlington without starting at the waterfront.
Spencer Smith Park is one of the city's most recognizable gathering places, and with good reason. Located along the shores of Lake Ontario, it offers beautiful walking paths, gardens, open green space and wonderful views across the water.
The Brant Street Pier has become a Burlington landmark. Whether you're enjoying an early morning walk, stopping for photographs or watching the sunset, it's one of those places that makes you appreciate where you live.
The waterfront is also a fantastic place to enjoy the changing seasons.
In the spring, the trees and gardens begin to bloom. Summer brings festivals, patios and people enjoying the lake. Autumn offers beautiful colours and cooler walks along the shoreline, while winter has its own peaceful charm.
A few waterfront favourites worth exploring include:
Spencer Smith Park: A beautiful place to walk, relax, picnic or enjoy community events.
Brant Street Pier: A signature Burlington landmark with wonderful views of Lake Ontario.
Beachway Park: A sandy beach and waterfront trails for enjoying summer days.
Paletta Lakefront Park: A quieter waterfront setting with mature trees, gardens and lovely walking paths.
LaSalle Park: A wonderful place to enjoy the natural shoreline, trails and opportunities to spot birds and other wildlife.
For anyone considering a move to Burlington, the waterfront is more than a beautiful attraction. It's part of the lifestyle, particularly for those who enjoy being outdoors, walking to restaurants or simply having the lake nearby.
Downtown Burlington: Restaurants, Patios and Local Charm
One of my favourite things about downtown Burlington is that it offers a wonderful mix of activity and neighbourhood character.
Brant Street and the surrounding downtown area are filled with restaurants, cafés, boutiques, services and places to meet friends.
It's the kind of place where you can start your day with coffee, browse a few local shops, meet friends for lunch and finish with a walk along the waterfront.
The historic Village Square is another charming downtown destination, with its brick walkways, distinctive architecture and intimate atmosphere.
Downtown dining offers plenty of variety, whether you're looking for a casual bite, a lively patio or somewhere special for an evening out.
A few places to know include:
Spencer's at the Waterfront: A beautiful setting for a meal overlooking Lake Ontario.
Paradiso: A longtime downtown dining destination.
Son of a Peach: A casual spot known for its pizza and lively atmosphere.
Bardō: A welcoming choice for pizza, pasta and a relaxed meal.
Kelly's Bake Shoppe: A downtown favourite for sweet treats and specialty baking.
Of course, part of the fun is discovering your own favourites. Restaurants and shops change over time, and there's always something new to explore.
What Is It Like to Live in Downtown Burlington?
Downtown living appeals to people who enjoy having shops, restaurants, parks and the waterfront close to home.
There are modern condominium buildings, townhomes and established residential streets, with some beautiful older houses tucked just beyond the busier downtown core. This is my teen son's favourite part of the city without a doubt!
From a real estate perspective, location within downtown matters. A quiet street within walking distance of the lake can offer a very different daily experience from living directly along a busy commercial corridor.
That's one of the reasons I always encourage buyers to spend time exploring a neighbourhood, not just viewing properties. Visit at different times of day, on the weekday and a weekend.

Parks, Trails and the Great Outdoors
One of Burlington's greatest advantages is how easily you can enjoy nature without travelling far from home.
With the Niagara Escarpment to the north and Lake Ontario to the south, there is no shortage of places to walk, hike, cycle or simply get outside.
Some of Burlington's Outdoor Favourites
Mount Nemo Conservation Area
Known for its escarpment views, forested trails and natural landscape, Mount Nemo is a favourite for those who love hiking and exploring the outdoors. The views from the escarpment are especially beautiful when the leaves change colour.
Royal Botanical Gardens
Spanning parts of Burlington and Hamilton, the Royal Botanical Gardens offers an extraordinary collection of gardens, nature sanctuaries and walking trails. Hendrie Park and the trails through Hendrie Valley are especially worth exploring.
Bronte Creek Provincial Park
Located along Burlington's eastern edge, Bronte Creek Provincial Park offers trails, green space, family activities and seasonal programs. It's a lovely destination for anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors.
Kerncliff Park
Tucked along the Niagara Escarpment, Kerncliff Park features walking trails, natural areas and a boardwalk through a beautiful wetland setting.
Lowville Park
One of North Burlington's treasures, Lowville Park offers a peaceful setting along Bronte Creek, with open green spaces and a picturesque rural atmosphere.
Burlington Waterfront Trail
For those who prefer a leisurely walk or bike ride, the waterfront trails provide wonderful views of Lake Ontario and connect several scenic destinations.
Having so many options close to home is particularly appealing if an active lifestyle, nature and outdoor recreation are priorities for you.
Country Living, Close to the City
Discovering North Burlington, Kilbride, Lowville and the Surrounding Countryside
This is a part of Burlington that I know particularly well, and one that deserves much more attention. I didn't used to be but country living has become my top choice in the last 15 years. Something about living on an acreage with neighbours not too far away but just enough to enjoy some privacy.
When people picture Burlington, they often think of the lake, downtown restaurants and beautiful residential neighbourhoods. But travel north of Dundas Street and you'll begin to discover a very different side of the city.
The roads become more scenic, the properties become more spacious and the landscape opens up to rolling countryside, mature trees, farmland and the natural beauty of the Niagara Escarpment.
It's a side of Burlington that can feel worlds away from city life, even though shopping, restaurants, schools and major highways remain within reach by car.
Kilbride: Village Charm and Rural Character
Kilbride is a charming rural community with a strong sense of history and a setting that feels distinctly different from Burlington's more urban neighbourhoods.
Here, you'll find a mix of traditional homes, country properties and larger lots surrounded by mature landscapes.
The natural surroundings are a big part of the appeal. Quiet roads, wooded properties and nearby conservation areas create a lifestyle that is difficult to duplicate in a typical subdivision.
For buyers looking for more space, privacy and a connection to nature, Kilbride is certainly worth exploring.
Lowville: A Beautiful Countryside Setting
Lowville is another special part of North Burlington.
Its historic village character, beautiful creek, surrounding farmland and mature trees give it a welcoming rural feel.
Lowville Park is a favourite destination, especially in the fall when the surrounding landscape is filled with colour.
The surrounding countryside offers everything from character-filled older homes to custom-built residences and properties with room for extensive gardens, workshops or outdoor hobbies.
The Appeal of a Country Property
One of the things I appreciate most about rural North Burlington is the freedom to create a home that reflects your lifestyle.
Perhaps you've always dreamed of a wraparound porch, a large vegetable garden, a workshop, a beautiful outdoor entertaining area or simply enough space between you and your neighbours to enjoy a little peace and quiet.
From a design perspective, country homes can offer incredible opportunities. Natural light, views of the surrounding landscape, unique architectural features and generous outdoor spaces can become part of the overall living experience.
But buying a rural property also requires a different approach than buying a home in a typical city neighbourhood.
Depending on the property, there may be additional considerations such as:
Private wells and septic systems
Property boundaries and access
Conservation authority regulations and land-use restrictions
Maintenance of larger lots and longer driveways
Heating systems, drainage and outbuildings
Internet availability and everyday commuting needs
These are important details to understand before purchasing.
Country living can be absolutely wonderful, but it's essential to choose a property that suits both your dreams and your everyday needs.
If you're considering a move to Kilbride, Lowville or rural North Burlington, I'd be happy to help you explore the area and understand what to look for in a country property.
Burlington's Neighbourhoods: Finding Your Perfect Fit
One of the reasons Burlington appeals to so many different buyers is the variety of neighbourhoods and housing styles available.
Each area offers something a little different.
Downtown Burlington
An appealing option for people who enjoy walkability, waterfront access, dining and a lively atmosphere. Housing includes condominiums, townhomes and character homes on established streets.
Roseland and Shoreacres
Known for beautiful mature neighbourhoods, tree-lined streets and a mix of traditional and custom-built homes. These areas attract buyers who appreciate established landscapes, distinctive properties and proximity to the lake in many locations.
Aldershot
Located in western Burlington, Aldershot has a mix of older homes, renovated properties, condominiums and newer developments. Its location near the Royal Botanical Gardens and transportation connections makes it worth considering for a range of lifestyles.
Millcroft and Headon Forest
Popular with buyers looking for established residential communities, parks and convenient access to shopping and other everyday amenities. Housing options vary, with detached homes, townhomes and condominium properties in different parts of these areas.
The Orchard and Alton Village
These neighbourhoods offer a variety of housing styles, including many newer homes compared with Burlington's older southern communities. Parks, schools, shopping and access to major roads are important features.
Tyandaga and Brant Hills
With mature trees, varied home styles and access to natural areas, these neighbourhoods offer their own distinctive character.
North Burlington, Kilbride and Lowville
For those dreaming of more land, scenic surroundings and a quieter rural lifestyle, North Burlington offers a completely different way to experience the city.
There really isn't one Burlington neighbourhood that suits everyone.
The best fit depends on what matters most to you, whether that's walkability, commuting, property size, architectural style, outdoor space or proximity to your favourite activities.
And sometimes, the right neighbourhood is one you hadn't initially considered.
Shopping in Burlington: From Local Boutiques to Everyday Convenience
Burlington has a good mix of local shopping destinations and larger retail centres.
Downtown Burlington is ideal for exploring independent boutiques, specialty shops and small businesses.
Mapleview Shopping Centre offers a large selection of fashion, beauty and lifestyle retailers, while Burlington Centre provides another convenient shopping destination with a variety of stores and services.
For home and garden enthusiasts, Burlington and the surrounding communities also offer garden centres, nurseries, home décor shops and seasonal markets.
And of course, shopping locally is a wonderful way to support the small businesses that give each community its own personality.

Festivals, Events and Community Traditions
Burlington has a great sense of community, and its festivals and seasonal events are a big part of that.
During the warmer months, the downtown waterfront often becomes the centre of activity.
Events and Traditions to Look Forward To:
Lakeshore Music & Arts Festival
The waterfront welcomed the Lakeshore Music & Arts Festival in 2026, continuing Burlington's longstanding tradition of bringing live music and community celebrations to the downtown area.
Canada's Largest Ribfest
A favourite Labour Day weekend tradition, Ribfest brings barbecue, entertainment and a festive atmosphere to Spencer Smith Park.
Canada Day Celebrations
The waterfront is a popular gathering place for Canada Day activities, with entertainment and celebrations that bring the community together.
Taste of Burlington
A wonderful opportunity to discover local restaurants and experience different menus and dining experiences throughout the city.
Seasonal Markets and Community Events
From outdoor markets and art events to holiday celebrations and neighbourhood activities, there's something to enjoy throughout the year.
Festival of Lights
During the holiday season, Spencer Smith Park takes on a different kind of beauty with colourful light displays along the waterfront.
Event schedules and participating businesses can change, so it's always worth checking the current calendar before making plans.
Commuting and Getting Around Burlington
For many people considering Burlington, location is an important part of the decision.
The city is well positioned between Toronto, Hamilton, Oakville and the Niagara region, making it attractive to buyers who commute or travel throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
Burlington has three GO Transit rail stations:
Aldershot GO
Burlington GO
Appleby GO
These stations provide access to regional transit connections, including GO service toward Toronto and the surrounding region.
Major transportation routes include the QEW, Highway 403 and Highway 407, although actual commuting times can vary considerably depending on traffic, departure time and destination.
Burlington Transit also connects residential areas with shopping, employment areas and transit stations.
When helping buyers compare neighbourhoods, I believe commuting deserves a place in the conversation right alongside bedrooms, kitchens and outdoor space.
A beautiful home is important, but so is having time to enjoy it.
Local Favourites: The Little Things That Make Burlington Special
Sometimes the things that make us love a community are not the big attractions, but the small experiences that become part of our routine.
A morning coffee before heading down to the waterfront.
An afternoon wandering through the Royal Botanical Gardens.
A drive through North Burlington when the leaves are changing colour.
Discovering a new restaurant downtown.
A summer evening at Spencer Smith Park.
Finding a garden centre that inspires your next backyard project.
Or simply coming home to a neighbourhood that feels comfortable and familiar.
These everyday moments are what turn a place into home.
And as someone who appreciates both real estate and design, I think our surroundings play a bigger role in that feeling than we sometimes realize.

Is Burlington, Ontario a Good Place to Live?
Burlington offers an appealing combination of established neighbourhoods, newer communities, waterfront access, parks, trails, shopping and transportation connections.
But whether it's the right place for you depends on your priorities.
If you're drawn to walkable neighbourhoods and restaurants, downtown might be a wonderful fit.
If you love mature trees, traditional architecture and established streets, areas such as Roseland, Shoreacres or Aldershot may catch your attention.
If newer homes and convenient amenities are high on your list, neighbourhoods such as The Orchard or Alton Village may be worth exploring.
And if your dream includes more land, privacy and natural surroundings, North Burlington might be exactly what you're looking for.
The important thing is to look beyond the house itself and consider how you want to live.
Finding a Home You'll Love in Burlington
When I look at a home, I see more than its current finishes or layout.
With my background in interior design, I'm always thinking about how a space works, what could be improved and whether a home has the potential to become something truly special.
A dated kitchen doesn't always mean the wrong house. An older home may have beautiful proportions, wonderful natural light and architectural features that are difficult to find in newer construction.
On the other hand, a beautifully renovated property isn't necessarily the right choice if the location or layout doesn't work for your lifestyle.
I enjoy helping buyers recognize those differences and see possibilities they may not have considered.
And for sellers, understanding what buyers notice and value can make a meaningful difference when preparing a home for the market.
Ultimately, my goal is to help you make informed real estate decisions and find a home that suits the way you want to live.
